Knife Gate Valve Manufacturer - KFTE

Knife gate valves are so-called because of their ability to cut through media containing solids. They work by lifting a round or rectangular gate out of the path of the media. The sealing surfaces between the gate and seats are planar, so knife gate valves are often used when a straight-line flow of fluid and minimum restriction is needed. Knife gate valves were designed for specific use in the pulp and paper industry. This was due to stringy pulp impinging between the wedge and seat of a normal gate valve and preventing flow shut-off. Knife gate valves have seen extensive use involving slurry, viscous fluids, and other applications where impingement is an issue and are used not only in pulp and paper production but are also widely used in municipal wastewater pumping stations and sewage treatment plants.

Types of Knife Gate Valve

Key Performance Features of Knife Gate Valve

1. Sealing Performance

  • Bi-Directional or Uni-Directional Sealing: Designed to handle slurries and viscous media, knife gate valves often feature a sharp, blade-like gate that cuts through solids for a tight seal. Some models are uni-directional (sealing against pressure from one side), while others offer bi-directional sealing.

  • Zero Leakage: Elastomeric seats (e.g., EPDM, Buna-N) or metal-to-metal seals ensure minimal leakage, critical in harsh environments like wastewater treatment or mining.

  • Pressure Differential Handling: Effective in maintaining seals under varying pressure conditions, especially in uni-directional designs.

2. Material and Durability

  • Abrasion Resistance: Constructed from hardened materials (e.g., stainless steel gates, carbon steel bodies) to withstand abrasive slurries.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Materials like SS316 or specialty alloys cater to corrosive fluids in chemical or marine applications.

  • Temperature Tolerance: Elastomer seats determine operational temperature ranges (typically -20°C to 200°C), while metal seats extend limits.

3. Operational Efficiency

  • Full Bore Design: Unobstructed flow path minimizes pressure drop and allows passage of solids without clogging.

  • Low Maintenance: Simple design with fewer components enables easy seat/gate replacement, often without removing the valve from the pipeline.

  • Compact and Lightweight: Easier installation in space-constrained areas compared to bulkier valve types.

4. Pressure and Flow Handling

  • Low to Medium Pressure: Typically rated for up to Class 300 (PN50), suitable for systems not requiring high-pressure resistance.

  • On/Off Functionality: Optimized for isolation rather than throttling, as throttling can cause erosion or vibration.

5. Actuation and Control

  • Versatile Actuation: Manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuation options cater to automation needs. Fast response times critical for emergency shutdowns.

  • Torque Requirements: Low operating torque due to lightweight design, reducing actuator costs.

  • 6. Design and Installation

  • Wafer, Lug, or Flanged Connections: Flexibility in pipeline integration.

  • Orientation Flexibility: Can be installed vertically or horizontally, depending on application needs.

Applications of Knife Gate Valves Overview
